How to Find the Right Oral Surgeon
Choosing the right oral and maxillofacial surgeon is an important step when considering procedures such as dental implants, wisdom teeth removal, or other forms of oral surgery. Because these treatments involve delicate structures of the mouth, jaw, and face, patients often benefit from seeing a specialist with advanced surgical training and experience.
When researching an oral surgeon, it can be helpful to review their education, credentials, and professional affiliations. Board certification is one indicator that a surgeon has completed extensive training and met rigorous standards within the specialty. Many patients also consider a surgeon’s experience with specific procedures, such as dental implant placement, bone grafting, or impacted wisdom teeth removal.
Patient reviews and referrals from dentists can also provide valuable insight into a surgeon’s reputation and quality of care. In addition, viewing before-and-after photos, learning about the technology used in the practice, and scheduling a consultation can help you better understand the surgeon’s approach.
Most importantly, patients should feel comfortable with their surgeon and confident in the treatment plan being recommended. A qualified oral surgeon will take time to explain your options, answer questions, and create a personalized plan designed to support your oral health and long-term results.
Why Choose a Board-Certified Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon?
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons complete years of advanced education and hospital-based surgical training beyond dental school. Board certification through the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS) represents an additional level of achievement, demonstrating a surgeon’s commitment to maintaining high standards of surgical knowledge, skill, and patient safety.
Dr. Jason B. Gile is a dual-degree oral and maxillofacial surgeon, holding both DDS and MD credentials. This extensive training provides a comprehensive understanding of the facial structures, allowing him to perform procedures involving the teeth, jaw, and facial anatomy with precision and care.
Board-certified oral surgeons are also committed to ongoing education and staying current with advancements in surgical techniques and technology. This dedication helps ensure patients receive modern, evidence-based care when undergoing procedures such as tooth extractions, dental implant placement, bone grafting, corrective jaw surgery, and the treatment of oral pathology and facial trauma.
What Questions Should I Ask My Oral Surgeon?
If you are considering oral surgery, asking the right questions can help you feel more confident about your care. A qualified oral and maxillofacial surgeon will be happy to discuss your concerns and explain the details of your treatment plan. Some helpful questions to ask during your consultation include:
- Are you board-certified in oral and maxillofacial surgery?
- How much experience do you have performing this procedure?
- What type of anesthesia or sedation will be used?
- What technology or imaging will be used to plan my procedure?
- What should I expect during recovery?
- Are there any risks or complications I should be aware of?
These conversations allow patients to better understand the procedure and the steps involved in achieving a successful outcome. An experienced oral surgeon will take time to answer questions, review imaging and treatment options, and ensure you feel informed and comfortable moving forward with care.
