Wisdom Teeth Removal

Home/Oral Surgery/Wisdom Teeth Removal

The wisdom teeth are the last set of molars to emerge — and the most likely to cause complications. At Rancho Del Rey Oral & Facial Surgery, our oral surgeons have extensive experience removing wisdom teeth that are impacted, painful, or positioned in a way that threatens surrounding teeth and oral health. Early evaluation and timely removal can prevent future problems and help ensure a smoother recovery with fewer risks. When urgent symptoms arise, our team makes every effort to provide prompt care, including same-day surgery when possible.

When Do Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Removed?

Not all wisdom teeth require removal, but it is common for them to cause issues when they:

  • Erupt at an angle or become impacted
  • Push against neighboring teeth and cause crowding
  • Lead to pain, swelling, or infection
  • Form cysts or damage the jawbone

In many cases, wisdom teeth are removed before symptoms arise as a preventive measure. Early removal, often during the late teens, can lead to a better recovery and lower risk of complications.

What Is Involved in the Wisdom Teeth Extraction Procedure?

Your oral surgeon will first evaluate your wisdom teeth using digital X-rays or a 3D scan to determine their position and condition. The tooth removal procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia, IV sedation, or general anesthesia, depending on your needs and preferences.

During the oral surgery, your surgeon gently opens the gum tissue and removes any bone covering the tooth before extracting it. In some cases, the tooth may be sectioned into smaller pieces for easier removal. The site is then cleaned and sutured to promote healing

What Is Recovery Like After Wisdom Teeth Extraction?

Most patients recover from wisdom tooth removal within a few days to a week. Swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort are common and can be managed with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medications. It is important to follow all post-operative instructions carefully, including resting, avoiding straws, and eating soft foods. With proper care, healing progresses quickly, and patients can return to normal activities soon after surgery.

Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) may also be recommended as part of your recovery plan. PRF is a concentration of your body’s own platelets that can be applied during oral surgery to support the natural healing process. Ask your surgeon if PRF is appropriate for your treatment.*

*Individual results may vary. Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) is intended to support the body’s natural healing process and is not a treatment for any medical condition.
