Surgical Instructions

Every surgical procedure is unique, and our team will provide you with detailed instructions tailored to your specific oral or maxillofacial treatment at the time of your visit. Following these guidelines is essential to support proper healing and minimize the risk of complications.

General reminders include:

  • Avoid smoking, drinking alcohol, or using recreational substances before and after surgery, as these can delay healing.
  • Arrange for someone to accompany you if your procedure involves IV sedation or general anesthesia, and have them stay with you for the first 24 hours.
  • Take all prescribed medications as directed. Over-the-counter pain relievers may also be recommended to help manage discomfort. Always take medications with food, and never combine them with alcohol.
  • Some bleeding is normal after surgery. If bleeding is heavy or continues beyond the first day, contact our office right away.
  • Apply ice packs to reduce swelling during the first 24 hours, and keep your head elevated when resting to help minimize discomfort.
  • Begin with a liquid or soft-food diet. Avoid straws, hard or crunchy foods, and chewing directly at the surgical site until cleared by your surgeon.
  • Do not rinse, brush near the site, or use mouthwash on the day of surgery. Gentle saltwater rinses may be started the following day as instructed.

After surgery, you will also receive procedure-specific instructions that cover diet, oral hygiene, and activity restrictions in more detail. Our team is available around the clock if you have questions or experience any concerns during recovery.

If you have any questions or experience any issues after your procedure, call our office immediately at (619) 421-2322.
